Stratton was born and raised in Wallace and has lived in Duplin County his entire life.

He is married to Jennifer Marie Stokes of Magnolia, and has a son, Stratton Sawyer Stokes. Jennifer graduated from UNCW and has worked in education as a teacher in the public school system for over 10 years.

He graduated Wallace-Rose Hill High School in 2000. In 2004, he graduated Campbell University with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion and Christian Ministries. In 2017 he graduated from Campbell Law.
